The Passion to open a Women's Center

Growing up in a home environment in which machismo was at the center of the stage, Maria quickly learned that her place in the home was to be invisible. As Maria grew older, she began to challenge these ideas and was labeled as "undomesticated" and became the outcast of the family. In college, she met several wonderful women who welcomed what her family thought to be strange, and helped her nourish her ideas. It was then that Maria felt a center for women and girls who have been labeled as "different" was imperative.

Maria began to form small groups in the community such as the MOM's Network, where mothers got together to share thoughts and ideas about raising a family: Girl Talk, these groups, divided by ages, gave girls the opportunity to freely express themselves and still feel accepted. The need in the community pushed Maria to develop more services to now include domestic violence and sexual assault survivors, life skills and independent living planning, mentoring and life coaching. In 2006, The Future Knowledge Center for Women was incorporated.

Since the incorporation in 2006, The Future Knowledge Center for Women, Inc. has serviced hundreds of families. As of 2011, The Future Knowledge Center for Women, Inc. offers a variety of services for and about women and girls, sponsors educational and cultural programs that are designed to promote gender equity, knowledge of women's rights and issues, financial independence, and leadership.
